austin bee helpers

I will be giving a talk on beekeeping this Saturday morning. Since I keep bumping into bad advice that new beekeepers receive, my talk will deal with the several main concepts that are mis-guided at best:

The need for queen excluders (there is none)

The trouble with purchasing a “starter hive” (plastic foundation in full sheets)

Feeding bees sugar or corn syrup (although the bees don’t die immediately from it)

Buying “marked” or “clipped” queens (because a maimed queen costs more)

Replacing queens every year (as though your bees don’t know what they’re doing)

Stopping swarms (as though swarming was a bad thing)

Anyway, if you would like to attend, let me know. I may write up my talk after I give it, and then post it here.

Best wishes for the new season!
